I’ve been saying for years that authenticity isn’t a look, a tactic, or an aesthetic. It’s a life. And somewhere along the way, “being real” got hijacked by the content machine. What was once about truth, consistency, and character turned into a strategy… something to craft, stage, optimize, and perform. But here’s the problem… the moment authenticity becomes something we package, it stops being something we live.

Ivonne Kinser said it beautifully in a recent LinkedIn post… “what people trust isn’t polish or vulnerability. It’s coherence.” And that word hits right at the heart of what I see every day. Brands trying to sound human instead of being human. Leaders posting one thing in public, behaving another way in private, and standing for nothing when standing up is inconvenient. The world doesn’t need more curated imperfection. It needs more coherence. Because at its core, authenticity is incredibly simple…

The story you tell, and the experience you create, MATCH. Online. Offline. And, most importantly… when no one is watching.

That’s the real test… NOT whether your tone sounds vulnerable enough… NOT whether your imperfection is polished enough… NOT whether your content “performs.” But whether your “words, actions, and values” stay aligned when the cameras are off, the audience is small, and the upside is zero.

Authenticity is lived in the follow-through…

In the way you treat people who can’t help you.
In the decisions you make when shortcuts are available.
In the quiet moments where no one is keeping score.

When leaders stop trying to “perform real” and start working to “be real,” everything shifts. Rough edges become a strength, not something to hide. Consistency becomes a differentiator. People feel safer, seen, and respected. TRUST COMPOUNDS!

And that, for me, is where the real RETURN ON RELATIONSHIP lives.

Not in the post.
Not in the optics.
Not in the perfectly imperfect story.

But in the coherence, the alignment between who you say you are… and who you actually show up as.

Because in the end, people don’t follow perfection… they follow integrity, they follow consistency, they follow truth lived out loud. And that’s something no algorithm can fake. #NoLetUp!
