“If you want to go far and not lose yourself on the way, you need a pace that lets you stay connected: to the work, to others, and to yourself.” ~Carla Birnberg
When I recently read Carla’s quote, it deeply resonated with me because, I’VE BEEN THERE (a few times in this journey called life), and it’s not just about speed or endurance, it’s about sustainability. It’s about making sure that as you move forward, you don’t disconnect from the very things that make the journey worthwhile, and deeply personal.
We live in a world obsessed with more. More output, more goals, more wins. But if “more” comes at the expense of your relationships, both with the world and with yourself, you eventually burn out… but more importantly you LOSE out. And when you burn out, you’re not just tired… you’re disconnected. From your purpose, your people, and the parts of yourself that fuel your creativity, empathy, and drive.
This is where RETURN ON RELATIONSHIP isn’t just a business principle, it’s a life principle. We talk about ROR in terms of marketing, community, and brand building, but it starts with the most personal investment you’ll ever make… the relationship you have with yourself.
Stay connected to the bigger picture. The people you serve, the communities you’re a part of, and the causes that matter. Don’t let chasing the next milestone cut you off from the relationships and values that give your work meaning.
Business and life are long games. The trust you build, the people you help, the networks you nurture, those are the compounding returns that keep paying dividends long after a single win fades from memory.
If you don’t pace yourself, the “you” who started the journey may not be the “you” who finishes it. Take time to recharge, TO THINK (so important as action has inappropriately taken the place of thinking), to check in with yourself. Protect the connection to your own sense of purpose.
Going far isn’t about speed, it’s about staying in the journey, and moving at a pace that allows you to keep seeing, hearing, and feeling what matters. That’s how you go the distance and still recognize yourself at the finish line. So ask yourself… am I moving at a speed that keeps me connected? Or am I going so fast I’m leaving myself behind? Pacing yourself doesn’t mean moving slow. It means moving connected. It’s the difference between arriving with your heart still full, or crossing the finish line with nothing left in the tank.
Because real success isn’t just reaching the goal. It’s reaching it with your relationships, and yourself, still intact.
