If you’ve ever had someone in your circle who brings you back to your center, who sees your blind spots, challenges the stories you tell yourself, and somehow reignites your fire when it begins to dim, you know how rare that relationship is.
We all appreciate the people who cheer us on… we need encouragement, we need people who celebrate our wins, remind us of our strengths, and stand beside us when things get difficult. But some of the most valuable people in our lives do something more… they don’t just cheer us on, they call us up.
They care enough to tell us what we may not want to hear. They question the narrative we’ve constructed when it is protecting us more than serving us. They recognize when frustration is becoming an excuse, when confidence is slipping into complacency, or when doubt is making us smaller than we need to be. And because the relationship is built on trust, we listen differently when it comes from them.
That distinction matters. There is a difference between someone who makes us feel good about ourselves and someone who helps us see ourselves more clearly. The best relationships can do both.
I’ve spent a lot of years talking about Return on Relationship, and the older I get, the more convinced I am that some of its greatest returns are impossible to measure. They don’t show up in likes, clicks, followers, connections, referrals, or revenue… sometimes the return is a conversation that changes the way you see something, sometimes it’s someone asking the question you’ve been avoiding, sometimes it’s a friend reminding you of something about yourself that you temporarily forgot.
AND sometimes it is simply having someone in your life who knows you well enough to recognize when you are drifting from your own center… and cares enough to say so.
That requires something from both sides of the relationship. It takes courage to hold up the mirror, but it also takes humility to look into it. If we surround ourselves only with people who reinforce what we already believe, applaud every decision, and confirm every story we tell ourselves, we may have plenty of support… but very little growth.
The people who call us up aren’t trying to remake us in their image. They aren’t keeping score, demonstrating their wisdom, or waiting for the opportunity to say, “I told you so.” They see something in us worth protecting, sometimes even when we are having trouble seeing it ourselves.
Because the real return isn’t in likes, clicks, or connections… it’s in clarity, it’s in belief, it’s in the quiet confidence that comes when someone who truly knows you holds up a mirror and says, “You’ve still got this.”
Here’s to those people. And perhaps just as importantly… here’s to being that person for someone else.
RETURN ON RELATIONSHIP is the real ROI.
