Stop Optimizing for Reach… Start Optimizing for Trust
Too many brands, marketers, and creators are still obsessing over who their audience is… demographics, titles, follower counts, neat little personas. That’s table stakes, and it’s no longer enough. The real question isn’t who your audience is. It’s who your audience influences…
Every audience has audiences. Everybody influences somebody.
Today, influence doesn’t require a massive following, a blue check, or even a “creator” label. It happens in Slack channels, group texts, comment threads, Zoom calls, PTA meetings, sales huddles, DMs, Discords, neighborhood gatherings, and yes… even at the digital version of the water cooler. (it’s an old reference, but humor me 🤷🏻♂️).
Word of mouth didn’t disappear… it simply became faster, broader, and infinitely more connected. Yet I still see people dismissing others as “not relevant” because their reach looks small, their title isn’t impressive, or their feed isn’t polished. That’s a mistake. Don’t dismiss someone because you don’t think they’re relevant to you… ask yourself who “they’re relevant to.’
You may discover that the most valuable connections aren’t always direct… they’re one conversation away. That’s where trust lives, that’s where conversations travel, and that’s where influence actually compounds.
If you want real reach, earned reach, don’t chase the loudest voices… earn your way into the circles behind them. The most valuable introductions rarely come from the people with the biggest audiences… they come from the people whose recommendations others genuinely trust. Relationships don’t just expand your reach, they expand the reach of everyone connected to you. That’s why RETURN ON RELATIONSHIP has always been about people, not platforms.
The real return isn’t a bigger audience, it’s earning relationships strong enough that people want to introduce you to theirs… because RETURN ON RELATIONSHIP adds more to ROI than meets the eye.
